Java la Grande. Size 55 x 39 cm. $100 +pp.
The Dieppe maps of the 16th century were noted for their unusual depiction of the Australian section of the world, as done by Nicolas Vallard. In 1984 Lawrence Fitzgerald (ex Australian Army Surveyor) suggested it represented an encoded map of the eastern section of the Australian continent. (See “Java La Grande” ISBN 0 949325007.) The Treaty of Tordesillas which eliminated the Portuguese from the Pacific area would provide the motive why such a coded map would exist should the Portuguese wish to chart in this restricted area.
